Some good sentiments here. I think stats in this piece actually show it's just a numbers game though. If more than 15 out of 20 people starting a biomed phd don't get an entry academic job, then of course there are more voices/stories of 'quitting'.

Nice article. For those of us who stay in academia for a long time - what is the one main reason to remain in this job? For me the NUMBER ONE is INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM (in research but also in teaching). I think that few other jobs offer such luxury.
