The research letter was based on a comparison of blood oxygen readings measured two ways (pulse ox and ABG) in two large patient cohorts. It found significant differences between the two readings in Black patients, but not in white ones: https://t.co/hOV9z

@CaptainAV @SinaiHemeOB Important observations, we’ve definitely seen R to L shunt in these patients. But, to complicate issues, remember the effect of skin color on pulse oximetry accuracy. https://t.co/c98DqWFO0W
Did you know that widely used oximeters have shown instances of racial biases towards those with a darker skin tone? Read more about this from the study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine: https://t.co/7nBMvMFYh1
@thep2pproject @CDCofBC @raincityhsg @OutreachSolid please include a note about racial bias https://t.co/oZidkzMVpZ

This is enlightening and has huge implications for how we manage Black patients. Also, likely a contributing factor in the high mortality rates in Blacks due to COVID.

I had to refresh myself on which device a 'pulse oximeter' was (it's the one that clips over your finger), and I can *absolutely* see how it could misread oxygenation in these cases.
