Surprise billing can expose patients to hundreds or thousands of dollars in medical bills. Air ambulance bills (also eliminated by the No Surprises Act!) can be particularly expensive. https://t.co/H01P635NQl
Very generous praise, @iwashyna. Channeled as much of @jdimick1’s magic as possible throughout this paper. I’m still shocked and somewhat amused that it’s required reading in health policy class (which was formative for me & so many others!)
We interrupt this thread for a @krchhabra appreciation tweet When Karan first mentioned to me studying surprise billing for elective surgery, I definitely was skeptical But I **LOVE** how he makes the case for its importance in this 2nd paragraph -- http

Surprise out-of-network billing is frustratingly common even for elective surgery at an in-network facility with an in-network surgeon. Great recent research: https://t.co/gRWPmU9FTy This shouldn't be legal! https://t.co/xvaVZmrF6O https://t.co/10LwBBSq
Call your legislator and ask them to support H. 506, the No Surprises Act.
JAMA study released this month found 20% of elective surgical episodes resulted in an out-of-network charge. Idahoans undergoing an elective surgery received a surprise bill between 26-46% of the time. Tell your Idaho legislator to support H. 506. https:
“20.5% of surveyed members received a surprise medical bill with an average charge of $2,011 from an out of network provider.” SIIA remains committed to protecting consumers and negotiating a benchmark reimbursement rate with a $5,000 threshold. https://t.
